What Is Anesthesia?

Anesthesia is the state of temporary, controlled unconsciousness that's used during surgery to control movement and pain, sometime induced using gas. What Precautions Are Taken?

Before the surgery, your pet will need to fast. This is to prevent vomiting and choking while under anesthesia. A vet will typically perform a pre-surgical exam to ensure that your pet is healthy enough to go under anesthesia, so the risk is very minimal. Blood and urine samples might also be taken to help ensure there aren’t any underlying conditions that could cause problems.

During the procedure, your pet will be monitored to make sure everything is happening as it should. After the procedure, your pet will spend some time in recovery to help ensure he is safely coming out of the anesthesia. You can also expect your pet to be sleepy for the rest of the day after surgery so make sure he has a safe area to lie down in when you get home.
